Many of you may have already stumbled upon the National Emergency Library during our transition to distance learning. The KLSD librarians have never shared this resource before, because it is being contested by authors and publishers who believe it to be an unethical/illegal venue distributing their work. A recent American Library Association webinar addressed issues of copyright in the time of Covid-19, and the lawyers on the panel shared the following points:
- Currently, we're in a situation where equity and access to resources is an emergency
- Copyright issues will be addressed after the emergency period concludes
- Content used in the midst of the emergency situation, but removed after the emergency concludes, will likely fall under the umbrella of "fair use"
- Anything you do share, should always be on a closed platform (do not record yourself doing a read aloud and post it publicly on YouTube)
We hope you find this information helpful!
